Cancelled Concerts and a Funny Story
Singing for the Girl Scouts last week with Nashville Opera (pc Hannah Marcoe)
It’s good to be home!
It’s less than good that I came down sick just three days after arriving home! Womp womp…
Disappointingly, the timing of my malady meant that I had to cancel my concert on June 11. Thankfully, we had already planned to give a repeat performance as a faculty concert at APSU in February, so all the hard work and hours of rehearsing are not in vain.
Thankfully, whatever upper respiratory thing it was (all my covid tests came back negative), I was well enough to get back out and sing at the beginning of this past week, so I didn’t have to miss any more gigs or auditions!
Two outreach performances with Nashville Opera, and a quick trip to St. Louis for an audition (my first Verdi audition!) made for a busy week!
Fun story about my trip to St. Louis: the morning of my audition, I asked the hotel I stayed at if they had a room where I might be able to warm up. I explained what I do for a living, and that this activity is loud enough that I didn’t want to upset the other hotel guests by doing this in my room. They kindly obliged, and allowed me to use a conference room off the lobby. I probably sang for 30 minutes. I did not consider that the guests eating breakfast just outside the door might be able to hear me.
Slightly embarrassingly, I stepped out of the conference room to applause. Apparently one of the guests thought I was a recording until the staff told him there was a person singing in the other room. He told me, “I didn’t expect to get opera with my breakfast, but it was wonderful!”
Thankfully, my audition went as well as my warmup! It’s always a good feeling to be able to walk out of an audition room feeling like if you don’t get hired, it’s not your fault!
This week is another busy one! I’ve got an Opera on Tap show Thursday, and another gig with Nashville Opera on Saturday. I have to sing Rossini this week. Pray for me, ya’ll.
Here’s my to-do’s for the week:
Memorize the Rossini duet I have to sing on Saturday (I’ve sung it before, but I had the luxury of being able to use music last time!)
Email five organizations
Wrap up things with my p/t job at the Symphony by the end of the month
Move my body every day so my lungs feel normal again!
